In the planning process of LED switching power supplies, engineers need to select appropriate driving methods for new products based on planning requirements. There are currently four commonly used methods for driving LED switch power supplies, namely high-voltage drive transition, low-voltage drive, mains drive, and low-voltage drive. Next, a brief analysis and introduction will be given on the driving methods of these four types of LED switching power supplies.

1. High voltage drive

High voltage drive is commonly used in some high-power LED switching power supplies, referring to drives with voltage drops higher than the tube voltage drop, such as 12V, 24V batteries, etc. High voltage drive requires addressing the issue of voltage reduction, as it is typically powered by ordinary batteries and requires a significant amount of power. The circuit structure of the converter is a series switch voltage reduction circuit.

2. Low voltage drive

Low voltage driving is a common driving method in the planning of LED switching power supplies, which refers to driving at a voltage lower than the forward conduction voltage drop of the LED. In practical application, low-voltage driving requires raising the voltage to a level sufficient to make the LED conductive and stable. Portable devices such as mobile phone backlights, LED flashlights, etc. are used for lighting. Due to the limitation of battery capacity, it generally does not require a large amount of power, but requires low cost, small size, and high conversion power. These use of charge pump boost converters is topology selection.

3. Municipal electric drive

Commercial power drive is currently the power supply method in the LED switch power supply category, especially in the LED lighting category, which is also a problem that must be addressed for the popularization and use of semiconductor lighting. The demand for mains driven LED requires handling voltage reduction and rectification issues, as well as a relatively high conversion power. Other issues should also be addressed in terms of safety isolation, considering the impact on the power grid, as well as electromagnetic interference and power factors. For small and medium power LEDs, isolated single ended flyback converters are a better circuit structure. For high-power use, a bridge circuit should be used to replace the circuit.

4. Transition voltage drive

Transition voltage driving is another optional driving method for LED switching power supplies, which refers to the fluctuation of the power supply voltage value near the voltage drop of the LED tube, perhaps with high and low values. Transition voltage drive not only needs to deal with boost and buck issues, but also requires the smallest possible size and lower cost. Reverse polarity charge pump converters have high cost-effectiveness.
